GOOD NEWS: Communications
Awards honor Serra clubs and secular press for getting the word out
This year, the Council is pleased to honor 23 clubs with awards for
excellence in communications via outstanding club newsletters. Club or district
representatives who were present at the USAC Annual Luncheon at the Pittsburgh
convention received certificates. The council mailed awards to winners who could
not be present.
The Communications Committee evaluates entries based on quality of content and layout, and how these components come together to form a newsletter that communicates effectively and efficiently. The following are recipients of awards for newsletters that scored highest in a particular district. The club name is preceded by its district number.

The highest scoring entry in the nation, which received the USA Council
Outstanding Newsletter Award, was the Serra Club of Lubbock, Texas’ newsletter,
“The Lubbock Serran,” edited by Robert Goyette. A second-time winner, Robert and
his club received a certificate and an engraved statue of Father Junipero Serra.
The USAC Communications Committee also presented the Spirit of Serra Award to four members of the secular media who produced vocation-affirming book publications, newsprint and television programs that significantly assist in the achievement of the goals and mission of Serra.
The following are the recipients of the Spirit of Serra Award:
Author Kristin Ohlson, for her book “Stalking the Divine: Contemplating Faith
with the Poor Clares” (Hyperion, New York, 2003) which depicts the spirituality
of the Poor Clares Sisters
Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer Gracie Bonds Staples, for her article
